Sally Wainwright is one of this country’s most acclaimed TV writers.

As the creator of some of Britain’s most celebrated television dramas including Happy Valley, Last Tango in Halifax and, more recently, Gentleman Jack, she has repeatedly claimed TV’s holy grail: massive viewing figures along with huge critical acclaim. In this documentary profile, Melvyn Bragg asks Wainwright about what inspires her dramas, largely set in the Yorkshire of her childhood, and how her years writing soaps helped her hone her craft.
