THE SOUTH BANK SHOW: CARYL PHILLIPS (60 mins for ITV, March 2003)

Filmed, with dramatisations, in the Caribbean, London and Leeds, this documentary profiles Caryl Phillips – the acclaimed British novelist, playwright and essayist. He was born in St.Kitts and came to Britain at the age of four months. As a child growing up in Leeds, he experienced the agony and ecstasy of supporting Leeds United – and, often as the only black face in the crowd, habitual racism.

‘…intellectually nourishing TV…’ Eve Standard

‘…another cracking edition of the arts show…’ Indy on Sunday

‘…an extraordinary South Bank Show…’ The Observer

‘…a fine film…’ The Guardian
